This is the third mission organized by Eye from Zion. The organization had organized similar missions to Vietnam and Burma, where over 400 operations were performed to save the sight of many patients. These missions were sent to areas that were heavily damaged by the tsunami, and the local populations there were cut off from regular medical care.
Nati Marcus, Chairman of Eye from Zion said, "In addition to our first priority of humanitarian aid, Eye of Zion wants to show the nice and different facets of Israel, particularly in these trying times."
Marcus added, "Since the organization began its work about two years ago, numerous doctors have been asking to take part in this humanitarian activity. Additional missions of eye surgeons will depart in December, with the assistance of MASHAV and the JDC to areas hard hit by the tsunami on the Maldives."
Ran Rahav, Honorary Consul of the Marshall Islands in Israel, thanked the members of the delegation as they prepared to depart for the Marshall Islands and Micronesia, and said, "This is a welcome initiative and a moving humanitarian gesture. Time after time, the State of Israel has proven to the world that in addition to an incredible volunteer effort and spirit of giving, the medical expertise here is among the finest in the world."
