The Nitijela
The Parliament of the Marshall Islands is called the Nitijela (“house of wise men”). There are 33 Senators, representing 24 constituencies from all across the country’s atolls. Every 4 years, citizens aged 18 and above, elect the senators to represent their home atoll. After the elections, the 33 senators elect the Speaker of the Nitijela and the President.
